What Is a Medicare Supplement Plan?

A Medicare Supplement Plan — also known as Medigap — is extra insurance you can buy to help cover the “gaps” in Original Medicare (Parts A and B). These gaps include out-of-pocket costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that Medicare doesn’t fully pay.

Unlike Medicare Advantage, a Medigap plan doesn’t replace your Medicare — it works alongside it. You keep all your Original Medicare benefits and get help managing costs, especially for hospital stays or frequent doctor visits.

Medigap policies are sold by private insurance companies, but they’re standardized and regulated — meaning Plan G from one company offers the same core benefits as Plan G from another. What changes is the premium and service, not the coverage.

What Does a Medicare Supplement Plan Cover?

A Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap) helps pay for the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover — which can add up fast if you’re hospitalized or managing chronic care.

What Are the Standardized Medigap Plans?

Medicare Supplement plans — also known as Medigap — are labeled by letters: Plan A through Plan N. Each plan type is standardized, meaning the benefits are the same no matter which insurance company you buy from. The only differences are the monthly premium and the customer service.

Most Popular Plans:

Plan G

Offers the most comprehensive coverage available to new Medicare enrollees. It pays for almost all out-of-pocket costs except the Part B deductible.

Plan N

Has slightly lower premiums than Plan G, but you may pay small copays for doctor visits and ER trips.

When Can I Enroll in a Medicare Supplement Plan?

The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap) is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period—a one-time 6-month window that starts when you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

Why this window matters:

  • Guaranteed coverage: You can buy any Medigap plan available in your state, regardless of your health history.
  • No medical underwriting: Insurers can’t deny you or charge more due to pre-existing conditions.
  • One-time opportunity: Once this 6-month period ends, these protections usually expire
