- You should apply for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday if you are eligible. You have to go for it even before you start receiving retirement benefits.
- You may sign up during the Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you want to enroll in Part B later on and your circumstances qualify as an eligible life event. However, if there is any problem or you are not eligible, you may wait for the General or Open Enrollment Period and receive delayed benefits.
- Medicare Part A, known as Hospital Insurance, will help you pay for a limited time at a skilled nursing facility or inpatient care in a hospital (following a hospital stay). It also bears some expenses of home health care and hospice care.
