What Is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) is a private insurance alternative to Original Medicare. It combines hospital (Part A) and medical (Part B) coverage into one plan — often with added perks like prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing.

You must first have Original Medicare to enroll. While you’ll still pay your Part B premium, many Advantage plans offer low or $0 monthly costs, depending on the carrier and your location.

One plan. More benefits. Less confusion.

What Do Medicare Advantage Plans Cover?

Medicare Advantage Plans covers everything included in Original Medicare (Parts A & B) — like hospital care, doctor visits, outpatient services, and preventive care. But most plans offer more.

Depending on your ZIP code and the insurance company, a Medicare Advantage plan may also include:

  • Prescription drug coverage (Part D)
  • Routine dental, vision, and hearing benefits
  • Transportation to medical appointments
  • Fitness programs like SilverSneakers

Because benefits can vary widely, it’s important to compare plans available in your area to find the right fit for your health needs and budget.

What Are the Types of Medicare Advantage Plans?

Not all Medicare Advantage plans are built the same. Understanding the different types can help you shop smarter and choose the one that fits your health and lifestyle.
Here are the most common types:

HMO

You’ll need to choose a primary care doctor and get referrals for specialists. Most care must be in-network, but these plans usually have lower costs.

PPO

Offers more flexibility with providers. You can see doctors in- or out-of-network without referrals, though out-of-network care typically costs more.

PFFS

These plans let you see any Medicare-approved doctor who agrees to the plan’s payment terms. No need to choose a primary doctor, but providers must accept the plan.

SNP

Designed for people with chronic conditions, those in nursing homes, or individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medi-Cal. These plans include tailored benefits and care coordination.

When Can I Enroll or Switch Medicare Advantage Plans??

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
This 7-month window starts 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birth month, and ends 3 months after. It’s your first chance to join a Medicare Advantage plan if you’re eligible for Parts A and B

Annual Election Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7
This is the main time each year to enroll in, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans. Changes take effect on January 1 of the following year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31
If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different plan or go back to Original Medicare during this time.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
Certain life events—like moving, losing other coverage, or qualifying for Medicaid—may let you make plan changes outside the standard periods.

Knowing your enrollment window can help you avoid delays, late penalties, or gaps in coverage.
