What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, and for younger individuals with certain disabilities or people with End-Stage Renal Disease. It covers hospital care, doctor visits, and other essential services through different parts—Part A, B, C, and D.

But Medicare isn’t automatic or all-inclusive. It doesn’t cover everything, and most people will need to decide whether to add extra coverage like a Medicare Advantage, Supplement, or Prescription Drug Plan.

Who Qualifies for Medicare?

You’re eligible for Medicare if:

What Are the Parts of Medicare? (A, B, C, D)

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A

Hospital Insurance
Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility stays, hospice care, and some home health services. you typically don’t pay a premium and you will be automatically signed up in most cases.
Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B

Medical Insurance
Part B includes doctor visits, outpatient services, lab work, preventive screenings, durable medical equipment, and some ambulance transportation. You’ll pay a monthly premium for Part B. Together, Parts A and B form Original Medicare.
Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C

Medicare Advantage
Part C, or Medicare Advantage, is offered by private insurance companies. It bundles Part A and Part B into one plan — and often includes extra benefits like prescription drug coverage (Part D), dental, vision, hearing, and wellness programs.
Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage
Part D helps pay for prescription medications. These plans are run by private insurers approved by Medicare and can be added to Original Medicare or included in many Medicare Advantage plans.

When Do I Apply for Medicare?

Enrolling at the right time can save you from penalties, delays, and gaps in coverage. Here’s how to know when to apply:
new-to-medicare

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your first chance to enroll begins 3 months before you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. That gives you a 7-month window to get started — penalty-free.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

If you delayed Medicare because you had employer coverage or another qualifying health plan, you’ll have 8 months to enroll once that coverage ends. SEPs help you avoid late fees — but you must act quickly.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

If you missed both the IEP and SEP, you can sign up for Original Medicare between January 1 and March 31. Coverage starts the first of the month after you enroll, but you may face late penalties.
